Why authors end up on both platforms

KDP is the shortest route to Amazon and pays the better royalty there. IngramSpark reaches the wider trade — bookshops, libraries and international distribution — and offers returnability, which shops care about. Plenty of authors use both: KDP for Amazon print, IngramSpark for everything else.

That only works if the book is genuinely the same book. Same ISBN policy, same trim, same page count, same interior file. The moment the two interiors drift apart you own two editions and two sets of corrections.

Formatting for both at once

Choose a trim size both platforms stock — 5 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5 and 6 x 9 are safe on either. Format once, proof once, and upload the same interior PDF to both accounts.

Then treat the covers as separate work. Each platform generates its own cover template from your final page count and paper stock, and the spine widths they calculate are not identical. Download the template from each and have the cover fitted to it.

The first is a cover built before the interior was final, so the spine is wrong by a few millimetres and the front artwork creeps around the edge. The second is a trim size that one platform stocks and the other does not, discovered at upload. The third is approving from the on-screen previewer alone, which renders generously and hides the gutter entirely.
